Frequently asked questions

There are a number of questions about our bikes that we encounter frequently. In the topics below we have collected the right answers.

Ordering and Prices symbol

Where can I buy a HASE BIKE? symbol

Our bikes and trikes can only be purchased from authorized dealers. You can find a map of our dealers here.

Where can I test-ride a HASE BIKES trike or tandem? symbol

Our authorized retailers keep certain models on site and will adjust them for you prior to your test ride. You can also sign up online for a consultation appointment with us. However, if you decide to purchase one of our products, you will need to go through your local retailer.

Why can’t I order products directly from HASE BIKES? symbol

Our tandems, trikes, and accessories are only shipped to authorized retailers. Our retail partners have the knowledge required for adjusting the bike or tandem to your individual needs and specifications. They also provide prompt, expert assistance with technical problems and maintenance work.

Why is a customized tandem or trike more expensive than the top-seller models? symbol

Our top-sellers are pre-configured models that are produced on an on-going basis (i.e. not only made to order). In general, they have shorter lead times and are cheaper to produce and assemble than custom models. With a customized configuration, you profit from the advantage of being able to fulfil your own wishes. For example, if you want a larger battery or a special color, our customization program makes it possible.

Models symbol

What models are available? symbol

HASE BIKES manufactures a range of specialized bikes and trikes. In addition to its PINO semi-recumbent tandem, there are various recumbent trikes for kids (TRIX, TRETS) and adults (KETTWIESEL, LEPUS, TRIGO).

What is the difference between the KETTWIESEL and the LEPUS? symbol

The KETTWIESEL is a recumbent trike with a lower seat position. All three wheels are 20”. Owing to the low center of gravity, a KETTWIESEL also offers very sporty handling. The LEPUS’s higher seat position and smaller, 16” front wheel make it a little easier to get into and out of the seat and gives the rider a good view of traffic. The seat is also 7 cm (2¾ inch) wider, offering additional comfort.

Why do HASE BIKES’ recumbent trikes have two wheels in back and one in front? symbol

We believe that the delta configuration is the best option for building a versatile and durable recumbent trike. The single front wheel allows for an extremely small turning radius, and the seating position in the rear third of the frame greatly improves both stability and traction. Additional arguments include the comfortable sitting position and the great ergonomic versatility that results from having a retractable front boom. More information on the advantages of our delta trikes can be found here.

Can I hitch my trike to a normal bicycle? symbol

Our TRETS, TRIX, and KETTWIESEL models can all be used in trailer mode (pulled by an upright bike). A tow bar is used for hitching the trike to a Weber coupling on the towing bicycle. Keep in mind that our motorized trikes cannot be used in trailer mode. For the larger models, like the TRIX and KETTWIESEL, we have developed an overrun brake system that brakes the pulled trike separately when the brakes of the towing bicycle are applied. Your local bicycle dealer can provide you with the appropriate heavy-duty hitch for your towing bicycle and help ensure that everything is mounted to professional standards. The Weber coupling is a very popular and commonly available accessory.

Can I use a trike to tow another trike? symbol

Yes, you can! We offer a Tandem Coupling for delta trikes. Keep in mind that using a motorized KETTWIESEL or LEPUS as a towed vehicle is not permitted, as it would cause motor system failure. However, it is no problem to pull an unmotorized delta trike behind a motorized trike. We recommend starting with a test ride in order to familiarize yourself with the differences in handling and the increased weight.

Why can’t I order the TRIX without the front wheel and chain/crank/gear system? symbol

We do not see our trikes primarily as trailers for transporting passengers, but as trikes for active riding. This is why it is important to us that you receive a complete trike that can be expanded with additional functionalities. Also, if you ever wish to sell your TRIX, the buyer would be thrilled to receive a trike with a barely-used front wheel.

Can I use my HASE BIKE to tow a bike trailer? symbol

Yes, you can. A so-called Weber coupling can be mounted to any of our models (except the TRETS). There are numerous bicycle-trailer manufacturers who use this hitch system for their trailers. Nevertheless, every trailer should be taken on a test ride with your HASE BIKE prior to purchase in order to ensure that its turning radius is suitable for the bike or trike: e.g. the trailer or hitch arm should not come in contact with the rear wheels of a trike when turning right or left. The PINO cannot be used with single-wheel trailers. A Weber coupling can be easily installed.

How can I make my HASE BIKES tandem or trike shorter / longer? symbol

Every HASE BIKES tandem and trike comes with a user manual in which the length-adjustment process is described in detail. If you are not sure about how to adjust the length of your tandem or trike, then contact your authorized dealer for assistance.

How much luggage can I carry with my HASE BIKES trike or tandem? symbol

You can find the load capacity for your trike or tandem in the technical data on the website page for the respective HASE BIKES model. Please keep in mind that trikes in trailer mode are not allowed to carry as much weight. For more information on load capacity for trikes being pulled as a trailer, see the user manual of the TRETS or Trailer Kit.

What adaptations and modifications are available for my HASE BIKES trike or tandem? symbol

Most of our authorized dealers stock adaptive accessories, like our Special Pedals and Crank Shorteners. A professional mechanic is required for mounting certain accessories, like the Foldable Fairings, or making adaptations to the drivetrain system.

E-Mobility symbol

What motors does HASE BIKES offer? symbol

Shimano EP8 (option for the KETTWIESEL / LEPUS and PINO)
A very lightweight mid-motor (2.6 kg/5.7 lb) with magnesium housing and a high maximum torque (85 Nm). With heat-conducting materials and a larger molded-in surface area, it is well-protected against overheating.

Shimano Steps E6100 (for the KETTWIESEL / LEPUS and PINO)
A mid-motor that provides pedal assistance up to a speed of 25 km/h (15 mph). On our trikes, it can be coupled with a Differential for excellent hill-climbing performance.

Shimano Steps E5000 (only for the TRIGO)
The optimal motor for urban terrain or your daily commute. An extremely quiet mid-motor that provides pedal assistance up to a speed of 25 km/h (15 mph).

Heinzmann Direct Power (KETTWIESEL / LEPUS)
A front-hub motor with 250 W and a torque of 60 Nm. It is particularly well-suited for riders with very little strength in their legs.

Which motor fits to my needs? symbol

To determine the best answer to this question, we recommend test-riding the respective trike or tandem with various motor types. During the test ride, you will get a feel for the properties of the motor system, which can help you make your decision. If you are planning on choosing a series E6100 or EP8 Shimano Steps motor, keep in mind that the motor torque is reduced when these motors are used in combination with the electronic 8-speed gear-shifting system. This is why we recommend using a different gear system if you know that you will need somewhat more motor power. With a Rohloff gear hub or a derailleur, you will have access to the maximum possible motor torque.

Does HASE BIKES also offer S-Pedelecs? symbol

No. All of our models with an electric motor have a maximum pedal-assist speed of 25 km/h (15 mph) and are therefore legally classified as bicycles in most regions (depending on local laws).

Can I retrofit an electric motor to my HASE BIKE? symbol

For its TRIGO, HASE BIKES offers a Shimano Steps retrofit kit, which must be installed by an authorized dealer. The retrofitting of a motor, e.g. a dealer’s own motor system, to any other model would automatically invalidate the HASE BIKES warranty.

How can I store my battery? symbol

Batteries for e-bikes are dependent on a certain minimum cut-off voltage. This is why you should never leave an empty battery unused for an extended period of time. Be sure to charge the battery to the level (State of Charge, SoC) recommended by the manufacturer for storage.

Service and Repairs symbol

Who can repair and service my HASE BIKES trike or tandem? symbol

Maintenance and repair work is carried out primarily by our authorized dealers and by the HASE BIKES partner who sold you your tandem or trike. If you have a warranty-related issue or complaint, please contact this HASE BIKES dealer for assistance.

Where can I find assistance if my motor system is defective? symbol

The same rule applies to motor systems: Your authorized retailer is your first point of contact. Your local bike shop will be experienced with the associated maintenance and repair work because Shimano and Heinzmann motor systems are also used in e-bikes from other manufacturers.

Where can I find replacement parts? symbol

HASE BIKES accessories and special replacement parts that are designed exclusively for use with our products can be purchased from an authorized retailer or your local bike shop. For standard parts, like tires or bells, you can also find the right replacement parts at a bicycle retailer.

How can I find replacement parts for older HASE BIKES models? symbol

We strive to provide replacement parts for as long as possible and are still able to offer various original or alternative spare parts for most old KETTWIESEL / LEPUS and PINO models. In some cases, the lead times for special parts like these may be slightly longer.

My child has outgrown the TRIX – do we need to buy a new trike? symbol

Your child has most likely simply outgrown the frame-quick-adjust assembly currently installed on the trike. You can have the chain lengthened and the frame-quick-adjust assembly replaced with the next larger version. This is how the TRIX can be adapted for taller riders of up to two meters (6’7”) in height.

Transport symbol

How can I transport my KETTWIESEL / LEPUS / TRIX? symbol

The frames of our delta trikes can be folded to a smaller size for transport. You can find information on the pack sizes and trike weight in the technical data for the respective model. Your user manual includes instructions on folding your trike.

How can I transport my PINO? symbol

All PINOs manufactured in or after 2021 have a telescoping frame that can be shortened enough to fit on a standard rear-mounted bike rack. For models manufactured in or before 2020, adapted bike racks may be available.
